Jemal Gamakharia. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D) in Historical Sciences (Doctor of historical sciences) public and political figure; Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia Was born on January 10, 1949, in the village Otobaia of Gali district (Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, Georgia). He graduated from the High school N1 ( 1966); Started to work in his native village (1966-1968). He served in the armed forces of the Soviet Union (1968-1970); in 1971-1976; studied and graduated from the Moscow Historical-Archival Institute (at present the State Humanitarian University). In 1978-1982 Jemal Gamakharia was an extra-mural student of the Post-graduate courses at Kuibyshev (Samara) State University. After completing the Postgraduate courses he passed his Ph.D. thesis defense. At different times and periods, he was engaged in scientific and pedagogical work at the State Historical Archive of Kuibyshev (Samara) district (1976-1980) and Kuibyshev (Samara) Polytechnic Institute (1980-1982). After returning to Sokhumi he worked as a teacher at the State University of Abkhazia (1982-1984), Subtropical University of Georgia (1984-2006), and later as Professor and Head of the Public Science Department. From the second half of the 80s, he participated in the national-liberation movement, the country's public and political life. In 1991 Jemal Gamakharia was elected a member of the Supreme Council of A / R of Abkhazia. Following the occupation of Abkhazia by the Russian Federation (1993) the Supreme Council continues to operate and function in Tbilisi. At different times Dr. Jemal Gamakharia was appointed a chairperson of one of the committees of the Supreme Council and is currently the Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council. Since April 2019 he is the Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia. In 1999-2004 he was elected the Member of Parliament of Georgia of the fifth calling. Dr. Jemal Gamakharia is engaged in scientific and publicist activities related to his political and social work. During his Institute and Postgraduate courses, he studied the history of Moscow, Moscow, and Kuibyshev (Samara) districts, to which he dedicated several works. After returning to his homeland (1982), the target of his research became the history of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia from ancient times till the present, as well as the situation in occupied Abkhazia and the issues related to de-occupation of the region, etc. To the above-mentioned and other topics, Dr. Jamal Gamakharia dedicated more than three dozen monographs, a collection of works, and brochures in different languages. Jemal Gamakharia’s writings also include several hundred scientific and publicistic letters, political speeches, announcements, and interviews published in various journals and newspapers. They cover the current political situation, de-occupation, history and culture of Abkhazia, and other important topics. He has a spouse - Rusudan Kharebava and two daughters – Salome and Sophia; his granddaughter Sophia Zeller.
